How to Fiberglass
Knowing how to Fiber Glass is a handy life skill that everyone should know. You can use it for many different applications such as creating body kits, subwoofer cabinets and much more. The principle of fiber glass is simple all it is resin which is a type of glue stuff being placed on the special fiberglass matting like cloth and when the glue dries it will become fiberglass which is very strong but also quite flexible.
If you are making something out of fiberglass you will have to make a mold this is usually made out of wood or metal but I strongly advise making it out of wood as metal is very hard to cut. For this example we will be making a subwoofer cabinet. You can use a existing mold or make one if you make one you will have to create the style that you want this can be achieved with a few hours, some wood (preferably new),some wood glue and a bit of can do attitude. Once you have made the cabinet you will have to make the round circle that the front end of the subwoofer will fit out of you could use a jigsaw and then sand it down to a circle.
Now you have made the mold you will have to find the parting line this is the line that you will still be able to pull the mold out off the fiberglass that you have just made. Cover the bits that you don't want to fiberglass yet with modeling clay, be very careful to stop at the parting line. Now make your mold as smooth as possible then you want to get some wax and wax all the surface before the parting line and then wipe the wax off then get blue pva mist and spray it allover the bit of the mold before the parting line you want many coats of this and then you get gel coat and spray it through your spray gun for this you will need a tip bigger than 2.5 mm. Apply two coats of gel coat and then mix up your resin and apply that until you get to the parting line then lay down you matting then more resin and more matting do that for as many coats as you would like remember though the more layers you have the stronger it is.
Now you have to take the clay off and then do the exact same procedure as you did for the first side but do it for the other side of the subwoofer box and once you are done carefully wedge the fiberglass off the mold and clean it up using an angle grinder and cutting disc you can now all you have to do Is glue the two pieces together and paint or carpet it.
