How to Build a Trailer

You can build a good utility trailer all by yourself. What you need is- An axle unit that can support the base, the base trailer can be directly purchased and comes in varying sizes. You also need to choose the trailer according to what you want to use it for. However, building your own base trailer will cost you lesser and this quite simple to do.

Following are a few helpful hints to provide you more information- You will need a cutting saw and welding equipment to cut and design the frame properly. The frame you create has to be flat and square shaped. When your frame is ready you will need to install the axle.

For the frame you will need angle iron. Before you have the lengths of the angle iron cut have your design measured and drawn on a paper. Cut the angle iron as per your design and weld them together using the welding machine. The floor frame has to be accurately symmetrical.

The most important aspect when fitting the axle is its positioning. The axle position will reflect on how well you can use your trailer. Where you put the axle depends on what the intended use of the trailer is. For instance, you plan to use it for loading and tilting stuff, the axle can be suitably positioned more on the center than towards the rear end of the trailer.

The towing tongue will need to be accurately calculated. As a rough guide you can use about 5 percent of the overall weight for the tongue. The axle unit will be attached using the spring assembly by attaching this to the hangars as per requirements. Once the spring assembly is attached you position the axle unit on to the spring assembly and attach it. Now you are ready to fit in the wheels and place the tires.

For fenders, you will need to cut these out from sheet metal and weld them on the trailer frame.

When your trailer is ready you need to paint it before you can use it. Prior to painting the body make sure that you have cleaned it thoroughly or the paint will not hold properly at places. Also ensure that you have removed all the rust before painting.

For the back end, you will need two pieces of iron angle that are welded and this can work as the gate. Alternatively you can also use boards. The other things you will now need to do is placing the lighting on the rear. You will need to follow suitable light codes as is mandatory by the law in your state. Also check out local laws if you are required to register your trailer for practical use.
